Twins found the Chilicothe Dock too busy with Labor Day traffic and too shallow at 4.5 ft near the end of the north wall. (I actually had the sensation of keel being on ground for the first time!)
This pool (between the locks) is shallow based on depths and water marks on bridges, etc., they could use some rain here! There have been complaints from Loopers of shallow water at marinas and anchorages here. There's a lot of mud being churned... We were even a little nervous about the marina entrances and it looked like they were dredging at Hamms....so we decided to anchor outside along the channel. (Big backup at Peoria Lock too, 3 Tows, PC's on Labor Day and a malfunctioning Lock.....we'll see how it is this morning)
But....We lucked out at a spot that Skipper Bob mentions (thanks again Bob....always remembered) It's Blue Creek Point near MM 173.2. We are between the point and the daymark at 173.2. Surprisingly deep after just trying to anchor on the other side (north) of the daymark. We are seeing 6 to 8? feet of water over mud. Bob mentions it as a shallow boat draft area on weekends but there was a bigger boat in here that left just before we anchored and the few remaining boats at anchor or on the beach cleared out for a calm and serene sunset setting.
Huge fish jumping (apparently Asian Carp?), blue heron fishing and some deer down for a drink. (I have lots of fish flies hitch hiking now though) A few tows but not much wake...We have a stern anchor out for the first time (length of chain...thanks Xplorer) and it actually seems to provide some flopper stopper characteristics.
I assume the good depth here is from scouring when the water is higher ....it's probably not like this on the other side of the charted point.
This was the first day of our second week on the water......We're lovin it!
